چکیده

Carbon constraints, as well the growing hazard of greenhouse gas emissions, have accelerated research into all possible renewable energy and fuel sources. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), a novel technology able to convert soluble organic matter such hydrogen gas, represent most recent breakthrough. While recovery from wastewater using microbial is fascinating carbon-neutral that still mostly limited lab-scale applications, much more work on improving function would be required expand their use in many these applications. The present limiting issues for effective scaling up manufacturing process include high costs cells, internal resistance methanogenesis, membrane/cathode biofouling. This paper examines evolution cell terms yield, operational aspects impact total output optimization studies, important information efficiency processes. Moreover, life-cycle assessment MEC comparison other technologies has been discussed. According results, at readiness level (TRL) 5, which means it ready industrial development, and, according techno-economics, may commercialized soon due its qualities.

Hydrogen gas production in a microbial electrolysis cell by electrohydrogenesis

Electrohydrogenesis is a bio-electrochemical process where organic material is microbially oxidized to protons and electrons, which in turn are reduced to form hydrogen gas (H2). The reactor in which these reactions occur is termed a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). The microorganisms that colonize the anode are known as electricigens and behave as biological catalysts, significantly reducing...

The significance of key operational variables to the enhancement of hydrogen production in a single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC)

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is one of the promising and cutting-edge technologies for generating hydrogen from wastewater through biodegradation of organic waste by exoelectrogenic microbes. In the MECs, the operational parameters, such as applied voltage (Eap), anode surface area, anode-cathode distance, and N2/CO2 volume ratio have a significant impact on the hydrogen yield and producti...

Microbial electrolysis desalination and chemical-production cell for CO2 sequestration.

Mineral carbonation can be used for CO2 sequestration, but the reaction rate is slow. In order to accelerate mineral carbonation, acid generated in a microbial electrolysis desalination and chemical-production cell (MEDCC) was examined to dissolve natural minerals rich in magnesium/calcium silicates (serpentine), and the alkali generated by the same process was used to absorb CO2 and precipitat...
